How to Check Plants for Pests Before Bringing Them Indoors

Outdoor plants often carry aphids, spider mites, whiteflies, or fungus gnats. Bring those indoors and they can spread to clean houseplants fast. Hose the plant, inspect it in good light, and quarantine it for about a week before it joins your indoor collection.

This step belongs on the Overwinter Indoors checklist alongside pot-up and windowsill care.

What to Look For

PestWhere to lookClues
AphidsSoft new growth, stems, leaf undersidesClusters of soft insects, sticky honeydew
Spider mitesLeaf undersides, especially in dry heatFine webbing, stippled pale leaves
WhitefliesLeaf undersidesTiny white moths when you disturb the plant
Fungus gnatsSoil surface and when you waterSmall flying insects rising from wet mix
ScaleWoody stemsBrown bumps that scrape off

Extension indoor-plant pest sheets stress inspection of leaf undersides and isolation of new plants. Do not rely on a quick glance at the top of the canopy.

Cleaning Steps

  1. Work outdoors or in a garage you can rinse. Lay a tarp if you need to catch soil.
  2. Spray leaves and stems with a strong stream of water. Support soft tips with your hand so you do not break them.
  3. Wipe large leaves with a damp cloth. Check leaf axils and the crown.
  4. Scrape or lift the top half inch of potting mix if you see algae, crust, or many gnats. Replace with fresh mix.
  5. For light aphid pressure, a mild insecticidal soap labeled for the plant can help. Follow the label. Do not mix random household cleaners.
  6. Discard plants that are heavily infested. One bad plant is not worth a houseplant outbreak.

Quarantine

After Quarantine

Place the plant in the brightest suitable window and follow crop-specific care. Herbs differ: see windowsill care for herbs you brought indoors. Use the Houseplants light and water tool for check ranges, and how often to water houseplants for the finger test.
