In USDA zone 3, October is usually too late for a new outdoor vegetable crop. Focus on harvest, frost protection, cleanup, and winter mulch. Garlic is normally planted earlier in this cold zone. Plant it now only if the soil is workable and your local Extension window is still open.

Plant Only If Local Timing Allows
