When to Plant Fall Broccoli
Set out fall broccoli transplants 10 to 12 weeks before your first frost so heads form in cool weather. Direct seed is usually too slow unless you started trays in July. In zones 3 to 5, transplant in early August. In zone 6, August. In zone 7, mid August to early September. In zone 8, September.
Broccoli heads are ready when the buds are tight and green, before they start to yellow or open into flowers. Cut the center head and leave the plant for smaller side shoots. See the broccoli plant page.
Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts need 90 to 110 days of growth and sweeten after frost. In zone 6, transplants should already be in by early August. In zone 7, the first half of August still works. In zone 5 and colder, August is late unless you have starts that are already large. Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart. Harvest sprouts from the bottom up when they are 1 to 1.5 inches and firm. See the brussels sprouts plant page.
Dates by Zone
- Zones 3 to 5: Broccoli transplants in early August. Brussels sprouts are a stretch unless planted in June or July.

- Zone 7: Broccoli from mid August to early September. Brussels sprouts in early August.
- Zone 8: Broccoli in September. Brussels sprouts in August.
Next Steps
Buy or transplant broccoli this week if you are in zone 7 or colder. Keep soil evenly moist. Heads that form in heat often button (stay tiny); shade cloth helps in August. Pair with fall kale.
