The Short Answer

In zones 8b, 9, and 10, put tulip and hyacinth bulbs in the refrigerator for 6 to 10 weeks at 40 to 45F, then plant them from mid December to early January. For a Dec 15 planting with 8 weeks of chill, start by about Oct 20. Keep them away from fruit.

Your dates are on the Bulb Desk. Pick zone 9 or 10.

Which Bulbs Need It

Texas A&M AgriLife lists tulips, crocus, some narcissus, and Dutch hyacinth as needing 6 to 10 weeks of chilling in Texas.

How to Chill Them

When to Plant

Plant from mid December to early January, when nights have been under 50F for several weeks. LSU AgCenter finds the best results from late December to early January plantings. Planting into soil that is still warm can undo the chill. Move bulbs straight from the refrigerator to the ground.

Do Not Buy Late Unchilled Bulbs

LSU AgCenter warns that tulip and hyacinth bulbs bought on sale in late December or January will not bloom well unless they were already refrigerated. Buy in early fall and start chilling. Chilled bulbs also cannot be held over for the next year.

Will They Come Back?

No. In zones 8b to 10 treat tulips and hyacinths as annuals. Pull them after bloom and buy fresh bulbs next fall.
